Yemen faces a severe water crisis, ranked among the most critical globally, with rural communities and IDPs lacking secure access to sustainable water sources. Driven by its humanitarian mandate, Human Hands Organization for Relief and Sustainable Development (HHO) focused its 2022 efforts on providing fundamental solutions to water challenges in the most impoverished areas. Providing safe and affordable drinking water is viewed as the cornerstone of social protection and a vital measure to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks.

In the WASH sector, HHO adopts a Stability and Localization methodology. Our projects transcend temporary water trucking to include the rehabilitation of water infrastructure to ensure long-term service continuity. This approach aims to:

• Support Livelihoods: Provide water to facilitate the revival of small-scale home and rural agricultural activities.

• Alleviate Suffering: Reduce the arduous distances traveled by residents—particularly women and children—to fetch water.

• Community Localization: Encourage residents to remain in their original villages by providing essential life-sustaining resources.

Field Impact and Geographical Reach

HHO’s interventions successfully reached over 7,000 beneficiaries in 2022 through a diverse package of projects, including well rehabilitation, provision of pumping systems, and improvement of distribution networks across five key governorates:

• Sana’a Governorate: Achieved the highest response rate, reaching 2,600 beneficiaries, focusing on high-density rural areas.

• Al-Hudaydah Governorate: Targeted 1,900 beneficiaries, with a focus on affected areas suffering from deteriorated basic services.

• Raymah Governorate: Due to its rugged terrain, HHO prioritized reaching 1,500 beneficiaries, helping to alleviate water isolation in mountainous regions.

• Hajjah Governorate: Our teams delivered water services to 700 beneficiaries in the most vulnerable areas.

• Marib Governorate: Responding to urgent needs, 300 beneficiaries were targeted to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water.
